The Key to Being a Bridesmaid: Do’s and Don’ts

Bridesmaid Do’s and Don’ts

So you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid! This is a great honor, and it is also a significant responsibility. Being a bridesmaid requires a great deal of time, energy, and commitment. If you are going to be one, there are a few things that you should know in advance.

What to Do as a Bridesmaid

  1. Know What is Expected of You

Before you accept the role, you should have a conversation with the bride to make sure that you can meet her expectations. What duties does she want you to fulfill? Being a bridesmaid requires time and energy, but it usually requires financial obligations as well. Can you afford to pay for the dress, shoes, accessories, and any associated travel costs? Make sure that you can confidently commit to all these things.

  1. Be a Source of Support

Wedding planning can be stressful! As a member of the bridal party, you should be there to offer support when needed. Whether it be talking the bride through the usual wedding anxieties or endless visits to bridal shops to find the perfect dress, be ready to offer your support!

  1. Keep Calm

When the bride is a bundle of nerves, especially on the wedding day, the last thing she needs is bridesmaids who are also in a tizzy. As a bridesmaid, think of things in advance that can help to calm a frazzled bride. Commit to being the voice of reason and source of calm. Getting together with other bridesmaids to buy bridal party robes and provide massages for everyone before the wedding is a great idea that will go a long way!

  1. Have a Great Time!

The joining of two hearts should be a celebration! Sure, there may be some stress involved, but be intentional about having a great time. As a bridesmaid, you should be excited and overjoyed for your friend, and those feelings should supersede all others.

What Not to Do as a Bridesmaid

  1. Have a Bad Attitude

If you accept the responsibility of being a bridesmaid, do not behave as though you were doing the bride a favor. There is no room for inflated egos or bad attitudes when you are in a wedding.

  1. Have Conflict With Other Members of the Bridal Party

A bridal party is made up of different personalities and temperaments, but you should be positive and do whatever it takes to get along with others. If you find yourself clashing with a fellow bridesmaid, remind yourself that you are there to support your friend.

  1. Show up Late

The last thing that a bride needs is the anxiety of wondering whether her bridesmaid will make it in time for the wedding! If you are the type of person who is usually running late, do whatever you need to do to ensure that you are there on time. And if you plan to be early, even last-minute challenges will not derail your timeliness.

Now that you have a good understanding of how you should function as a bridesmaid, do you think that you’re up for the challenge? Being part of such an important moment in your friend’s life is a major honor, one that she will always be grateful to you for. Just remember to relax, have a good time, and bask in the beauty of the occasion!
