Julia and Sean gave their wedding guests a true Philadelphia experience! The Union League of Philadelphia was befittingly a great venue choice with it’s historic Philly charm. From the couple’s glowing admiration for one another to the intimate feel of their ceremony and reception, this wedding was wildly romantic in every way. Petals Lane incorporated white garden roses, anemones, and sea holly into the floral design which added a touch of elegance to this whimsical day. How They Met:
“We met online! Despite both living in South Africa – Julia as a study abroad student in Cape Town and Sean was born and raised in Johannesburg – our paths did not cross until the invention of JDate. We hit it off from the start, as evidenced by the waiter on our first date who politely kicked us out of the restaurant after talking for four straight hours.”
The Proposal:
“On a trip to Cape Town, Sean planned a day full of surprises, from a beautiful hotel to massages, to a romantic meal. After each surprise, I had thought he might propose but was enjoying the incredible day regardless. At sunset, Sean asked me to go for a walk, and at the top of a cliff, he got down on one knee. Although I was half expecting the proposal all day, I was so overcome with emotion that I cried for the next 5 minutes, until Sean reminded me I never said yes!”
Wedding Planning:
“It was smooth sailing for us. First, we had a lot of help from family who had experience with wedding planning. We also did a lot of research to ensure we worked with experts who had years of experience and glowing reviews. We trusted our vendors’ recommendations and knew that in their very capable hands, the day would be executed flawlessly. They certainly delivered!”
About the Venue, The Union League of Philadelphia:
“It was important to us to have a venue that captured the history and culture of Philadelphia. Most of our wedding guests were from out of town, or even out of the country, so we wanted to show them the best that Philadelphia has to offer. The Union League has it all, beautiful architecture, impressive history, and amazing food.”
Wedding Inspiration:
“We wanted our wedding to be romantic and intimate. We chose a smaller ballroom for the reception, used draping to make the space feel secluded, and used smaller tables for the meal. For the décor, we used small low centerpieces with loose florals and lots of candles to give the room an understated elegance.”
Best Wedding Memory:
“During the ceremony, a drum line started marching down Broad Street. The officiant, without missing a beat, said “Wow- I’ve never done this to drums before! You are certainly getting a true Philly welcome.” It was lighthearted and unexpected- and certainly, fit into the mood of the day!”
Wedding Planning Advice:
“Keep it simple! With a small guest list, small bridal party, and fewer vendors, your headaches are minimized. Try to streamline as much as your vision allows.”
