Winter will be in full effect tomorrow, well slightly if you minus all of the 70+ degree we’ve been having! Nonetheless the colder season brings out some very warm and bold trends, especially in the makeup department! I personally love this time of year, because we get to see darker colors in makeup and choosing the perfect lipstick can really make your wedding day look extraordinary! I had the pleasure of speaking with a few Philadelphia makeup artists who surely know the trends in the Winter season. See what they had to say when discussing the best trends for winter lipstick, tips, and their favorite lip products!

“This time of year is always welcomed by hair and makeup vendors in the wedding industry, not only for the much needed break, but also because most brides tend to go bolder with their hair and makeup choices. Sleeker hair styles, heavy lashes, dark lips. Once fall hits, we start to see choices of berry tones, to deep reds, or even dark plum tones. In the fashion side of our industry, we see even more fun choices with navy blues, and deep teals! As artists its fun to experiment, and I usually create my own lip colors when a client calls for something unique. Being an artist that uses all cruelty free products, a few of my favorites are Lime Crime’s Velvetines, and Tarte’s lip tints. For a more classic lip stick, urban decay makes some great matte colors that have heavy pigments. Any colors can be mixed or layered for a fun ombre lip, depending on how bold the client really wants to go!” – Gina Osborne, Owner of True Beauty Marks

“I love Jane Iredale Lip Fixation and use it often. I used the “Fetish” shade, a plummy berry shade, on my gorgeous bride, Abby, in October at Cairnwood Estates” – Beke, Owner of Beke Beau

“The colder months are known for richer, darker, more “luxurious” shades in makeup, lipstick being the primary example. We transition into more plums, mauves and brick reds as the temperature gets cooler. Red tones are always a standard, but you may want to opt for a deeper shade, like our bride Allison (above). D for Danger by MAC is a beautiful brick red with a matte finish, which is in trend for winter. Be sure to match the lipstick with a corresponding lip liner, like MAC’s lip liner in Brick” –Dana Persia, Owner of Beautiful Brides Philly

“My favorite bold lipstick of all time, but especially against the white of winter, is Sephora’s long lasting Lip cream stain in “Always Red”. It
looks good on just about any skin tone and lasts forever! Other loves and biggest winners amongst my brides: Maybelline’s Color Stay 24 hr Lipstain in Timeless Toffee– the ultimate Nude for light to medium skin tones, if you don’t mind a little shine as it works best with the moisture stick attached to the bottom. Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Pastel Pink or Peony – depending on your skin tone each of these will do the trick to create a gorgeous pink lip that give just enough glamour. Dubbed a lip gloss, it is hydrating but does a great job with staying power. Kat Von D’s Everlasting liquid Lipstick in Lolita- a cult favorite, and truly a gorgeous fall and winter color that changes depending on your skin tone. It has suffered criticism for its color to keep consistence through supply and manufacture so much so that Kat create a limited edition lip due in Lolita 1 and Lolita 2 showcasing the differences. I like both, but the original Lolita is the true winner no matter what. NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugen– All my clients know this is one of my go to lips for my natural ladies. It is the perfect ‘just kissed’ pink and definitely has staying power. Mac’s Soar Lip Liner– I know its not a lipstick but a truly versatile product, this liner can be used on its own with a little gloss, or with really any of the above products to give a dimensional look while remaining pretty natural. It’s the perfect liner for just about any lip color, and adds a really pretty mauve to the look. Ultimately, [there are no rules when it comes to creativity, mixing and matching lipstick together usually leads to the best results]! Case in point with this image, where I mixed Sephoras Long lasting Lip cream stain Always Red with Obsessive Compulsive Lip tar in Black Dahlia….bold AND pretty!” – Diana DuHaime, Owner of Occasions By Diana

“For bridal lipstick I chose Be Legendary Long Wear Lip Lacquer by Smashbox, especially in the Winter. This product goes on so smooth you will be amazed. It will leave your lips feeling moisturized and not dry, cracked or flaky like some other lip stains. The reason it is my choice for any special occasion is because of its longevity—it stays on so long! You won’t have to worry about reapplying for hours and your lips won’t feel like you have been walking through the desert for days! Perfect for your wedding day or if you just don’t like reapplying your lip product every hour. Pair this with Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner and you are good to go!” – Nina Moran, Owner & Lead Artist of Cheekadee Makeup Artist
